What is Animated Symbol?

Animated Symbol is a whole collection of graphics for use as representations of process components. The collection of libraries in Animated Symbol covers a large variety of symbols including 3-D pushbuttons, conveyor belts, flow meters, mixers, motors, valves and pumps among others.

Each symbol from the collection is configurable for two separate conditions: a normal state when the process component it represents is not in alarm and an alarm state when the process component it represents is in alarm.

How to find the library of symbols for Animated Symbol ?

Access to Animated Symbol symbols is accomplished by dragging the Animated Symbol icon, images\AnimatedSymbol-icon.gif from the Drawing Toolbar onto the diagram, where the symbol is to be used, and then left clicking on the resultant black square or loaded icon.

A default symbol representing a blower is then placed on the diagram. images\DEF_AnimatedSym_defaultsymbol.gif To gain access to the remaining symbol libraries and exchange the blower for the symbol needed, double click the left mouse button while inside the blower graphic.

The Animated Symbol library then appears. By scrolling the scroll bar on the left, the various categories of symbols appear. By clicking on a category, the contents of that category are displayed in the middle window. To bring the symbol chosen onto the diagram, simply select it and then click the OK button at the bottom right of the dialog box.

Independent symbol use

Like other graphics in IGSS, the symbols found in Animated Symbol can be used without being bound to an IGSS object. The symbol is simply put onto the diagram. By clicking on the symbol itself to bring up the Properties dialog box which is shown in the illustration above, the symbol has Unbound symbol status as can be seen on the tab in the upper right hand corner in the drop down box.

The symbol can, however, still be configured to exhibit the color and blink characteristics chosen for it in the Fill Color, Background, Blink and Orientation areas on the right hand side of the dialog box. The characteristics defined will not be seen fully until the configuration has been saved and installed and the IGSS Starter activated.

Bound to an IGSS object

After placing the Animated Symbol graphic on the diagram, it can be bound to an IGSS object by right clicking on the symbol and then clicking on Connect… .The Object Browser appears, and the object to which the symbol is to be bound is selcted.

Double clicking on the symbol now brings up the Properties tabs for the object to which the symbol is now bound and the Animated Symbol tab is now one of the Properties tabs of the given object.

Go to the Animated Symbol tab and an extra entry has been added to the drop down box in the upper right hand corner. This extra entry is called In alarm and by selecting it, all the color, blink and orientation options can again be configured for when the object which the symbol represents is in alarm.

Two further options are available for defining the characteristics of the given symbol. These are check box selections found at the bottom and are called:

Save as template By selecting this option, all the color, background and orientation selections are saved together with the symbol.

Stretchable By selecting this option, the symbol can be scaled proportionately.
