Scenario: A production process as subdiagrams

Purpose

To illustrate the embedded diagram feature in IGSS, we’ve designed a scenario of a production process.

The process is logically divided into three sections:

Instead of creating three separate diagrams, we create one main diagram called “Production” which includes the above sections as three subdiagrams.

Design considerations

Using this design enables the operator to access the entire production process from one standard IGSS diagram. The alternative would be to create one main production diagram and one diagram per subprocess, i.e. 4 standard diagrams. Furthermore, we would have to provide operator access from the main diagram to the subprocesses via buttons. When we use the embedded diagram feature, the buttons appear automatically.

Final result

The final diagram will look like this and consists of the following elements:

When defining the subdiagrams, we determine the size and location of the button bar. Here it is placed at the top, other alternatives are bottom, left or right. The operator navigates between the subdiagrams using the buttons.

IGSS features an “alarm see-thru” function which allows the operator to get an alarm indication on a button or field referencing this diagram. So, imagine that we have an overview diagram for the whole factory with a button for each process. One button refers to the “Production” diagram and when an alarm occurs on one of the subdiagrams, the button will start blinking.

The final result will look like this. Click here for a step-by-step procedure.
